Volkswagen Scirocco R

The hottest-ever Scirocco has just blown in - and it should go down a storm when it comes to the UK in 2010!

Volkswagen wowed visitors to Italy's Bologna Motor Show with this striking concept car, called the Studie R.

Auto Express reveals that it previews a new performance flagship Scirocco which will rival Ford's Focus RS, and is effectively a roadgoing version of the GT24 racer.
When the model joins the line-up, it's likely to be badged R20T - as Auto Express revealed in Issue 1,041. It will come with a

2.0-litre TFSI turbocharged petrol engine, giving 262bhp. This power-plant has been shoehorned into the Studie R, and is a development of the current Audi S3's unit. It promises to shave about a second off the Audi's 0-62mph time, giving a figure of around six seconds. The VW Group's dual-clutch DSG box is also likely to feature.

The Studie R's racing genes are much in evidence, with sports suspension, four-pot brake calipers and what VW says is a 'sound-optimised' exhaust system. If this makes it to the production version of the car, your neighbours will certainly hear you coming!

To appeal to show-goers at Bologna, VW added red and green flashes to the sparkling white paint job, making up the Italian tricolour flag.

The Studie R also gets a sporty body kit, while a deep front splitter incorporates three large air inlet openings to cool the brakes and engine. This is also designed to minimize the aerodynamic lift of the front axle. Further intakes feature in the car's bonnet.

At the back, there's a large integrated rear wing, as well as a diffuser in the lower section of the bumper. These combine to reduce lift at the rear axle and keep the Scirocco firmly planted on the road.

New side skirts and a set of highly polished 19-inch alloy wheels, each with five sets of triple spokes, provide the car with a dramatic profile. Inside, there's softblack Nappa leather on the steering wheel, front armrest, gearlever trim and floor mat, with white stitching to reflect the exterior colour.

The Recaro racing seats are also upholstered with a carbon-look deep blackhide, finished off with white leather piping. More carbon fibre appears throughout the cabin, while there's a set of special aluminium pedals, too.

Volkswagen is playing its cards close to its chest with regard to pricing, although UK buyers can expect to pay around £25,000 when the car arrives in showrooms.

2010 Toyota Supra

According to BC, the 2010 Supra will most likely make use of a naturally-aspirated 3.7-litre V6 driving through the rear wheels (natch).

Power should be around the 350 metric horsepower mark and forced-induction may very well become an option.

The overall proportions are a close match with the FT-HS concept, except this time the body design

reprises the wide n' curvy haunches of the last-gen JZA80 Supra. The front lights even replicate the lamp placement of the JZA80, and the C-pillar also echoes that of its predecessor. BC's rendering even showcases the FTHS's trick carbon-fibre rims, as well as its bonnet “bulge”, however one thing we'd liked to have seen carried over from the FTHS concept was its sexy rear light cluster. Instead, Best Car chose to go with some kind of Ferrari/Elise type arrangement.

Honda Accord Tops In EuroNCAP Crash Tests

Honda's new Accord has achieved the first three star pedestrian tests rating for the Large Family class in the latest Euro NCAP crash test results published.

In addition, the Accord has the best overall performance for combined safety in this class with 5-star adult protection, 4-star child protection and 3-star pedestrian protection.

“We are delighted with the EuroNCAP result, which confirms the new Accord as

the leader for combined adult, child and pedestrian safety in the large family car class. Add to this the advanced active safety features of the Accord and customers can experience the most effective safety technologies put into practice with our goal of providing safety for everyone,” said Ken Keir, Senior Vice President of Honda Motor Europe.

In addition, EuroNCAP has, for the first time, published Whiplash ratings for the front seats and the Accord achieves a score 2.26 out of 4.
Safety Profile of the Honda Accord

Complementing an armoury of passive safety features is an outstanding array of dynamic systems delivering even greater security. VSA (Vehicle Stability Assist) is standard across the range and is designed to assist the driver in maintaining control during cornering, acceleration and sudden manoeuvres by applying braking to the right or left hand wheels as necessary and modulating the engine torque output as required.

Motion Adaptive EPS
The new Accord also features an innovative system in which the capabilities of both VSA and the car's Electric Power Steering are brought to bear. Called Motion Adaptive EPS, it detects instability in slippery conditions both during cornering and under braking and automatically initiates steering inputs aimed at prompting the driver to steer in the correct direction.

The input is barely noticeable and control of the steering remains with the driver at all times. But this supporting steering torque is enough to prompt the driver to act intuitively and the driver's reaction as a result is enough to regain stability or to shorten braking distances, allowing control to be maintained.

ADAS optional across the range
Optionally available on the Executive grade of the 2.2 i-DTEC and 2.4 i-VTEC is Honda's Advanced Driving Assist System (ADAS), a suite of three ground-breaking technologies that raise safety to a new level. The first of these is the Lane Keeping Assist System (LKAS) which uses a camera to detect the car deviating from a traffic lane and provides steering torque when necessary, thereby reducing the burden of motorway driving while at the same time enhancing safety.

Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) uses a millimetre-wave radar to maintain a consistent distance to a vehicle directly in front, for more relaxed, less tiring driving: and Collision Mitigation Brake System (CMBS) monitors the following distance and closing rate between the Accord and the car directly in front of it, warning the driver when a collision is likely and helping reduce impact when a collision becomes unavoidable.

These systems complement the Accord's passive safety features which include front seatbelt pre-tensioners and load limiters, dual stage front airbags, driver and front passenger side airbags, full length curtain airbags and ISOFIX fittings and tether anchor points for secure child seat fixture on all models.

There are also front seat active headrests which are triggered when the occupant is pushed into the seat in the event of a rear impact, so causing a rigid plate to activate a link to the headrest which pushes it forward to support the head.

Advanced Compatibility Engineering (ACE) Body Structure
Progressively introduced throughout the Honda range, the Accord's Advanced Compatibility Engineering (ACE) Body Structure provides significantly enhanced occupant protection in a variety of real-world crash conditions.

A front-mounted polygonal main frame is designed to prevent cabin deformation by distributing forces through multiple major load bearing pathways - and away from the passenger compartment. This is particularly important where a frontal collision occurs between vehicles of differing heights, weights or frame construction.

To achieve top level, side impact safety, Honda's engineers have increased the side section of the frame and chosen different material specifications to provide the desired level of stiffness and strength for critical areas, without adding unnecessary weight.

The new Accord also incorporates many of the pedestrian-protection design features already familiar from recent Honda models, including windscreen wiper pivots designed to break away on impact, energy absorbing front wing mounts and bonnet hinges alongside an unobstructed area beneath the bonnet allowing greater space for deformation.

2009 Volkswagen CC VR6 Sport

The good: The 2009 Volkswagen CC VR6 Sport is a really good-looking sedan with a luxurious interior.

Its engine delivers power and good fuel economy, and the driving experience is smooth. The navigation system shows live traffic and the audio system is very clear.

The bad: The cabin electronics are beset by odd problems, such as

difficulty copying music to the car's hard drive and a navigation system that can be hard to use. The bottom line: A really beautiful sedan, the 2009 Volkswagen CC VR6 Sport returns decent fuel economy and a comfortable ride, but the cutting-edge cabin tech has a few faults, and the car is pricey.

If the 2009 Volkswagen CC VR6 Sport represents the future of Volkswagen, the company has a bright future indeed, and we get to benefit from some very beautiful cars that strive toward luxury. But the CC's beauty is mostly skin deep, as many attributes of the car reflect its folks' wagon underpinnings. The engine and interior quality are clear stand-outs, but the ride quality removes some of the car's luster.

Electronics also seem impressive at first, but the cabin gadgets are bedeviled by weird quirks and outright faults. The model's broad $13,000 price range between base and upscale models suggests Volkswagen couldn't decide if it wanted to market a midsize or sport-luxury sedan. But we can't deny the car's aesthetic appeal, its nicely curved roofline suggesting the much more expensive Mercedes-Benz Cl550.

Hyundai Reveals Hybrid Blue Drive Architecture

Hyundai is not afraid to push ahead with its own hybrid technology and take on Toyota and Honda for preeminence in the hybrid domain.

At the Los Angeles Auto Show, Hyundai has introduced its Hybrid Blue Drive Architecture which features an array of technical components that will go into its hybrid series.

The core of it features a 30kW electric motor with 205 Nm of torque tethered to either the 2.4 liter Theta II engine, or the 2.0 liter

Theta Turbo GDI, all with a 6-speed automatic transmission.
Hyundai is also using lithium polymer batteries, instead of lithium-ion, which have more power density and use a gel electrolyte instead of liquid one, making batteries smaller and more reliable.

Stop-start technology is also included in the architecture for further improved fuel economy. Hyundai plans to begin introducing its Hybrid Blue Drive Architecture next year in “Blue” editions of its Accent and Elantra models.

Kia Motors Wins 2008 Design Award

Kia Motors received the President's Award for Design on November 28, 2008 at the 10th annual Korea Design Awards in recognition of the company's design-centered management strategy implemented in multiple stages since 2005.

The prestigious award was presented by the President of the Republic of Korea, Mr. Myung-bak Lee, and recognizes Kia's

leadership in design. Since the strategic appointment of Chief Design Officer Peter Schreyer in 2006, Kia has designed and produced a series of new and refreshed models, and concepts, focused around what Schreyer calls a "linear and minimalist" design language.

The backbone of this drive has been the creation and operation of a global design network which has included the opening of dedicated Kia Design Centers in North America and Germany.
Euisun Chung, President of Kia Motors said, “Our cross-company pursuit of design excellence since 2005 has finally come to fruition.

We will use the Korea Design Award as a stepping stone to continue to infuse our creative design spirit throughout many aspects of Kia's business, not just limiting our efforts to product design.”

The award also recognized the creative, above-the-line corporate advertising campaign introduced in the Korea market since 2007 as well as newly designed vehicles recently released locally, including the Mohave

(known as Borrego in other markets), Lotze Innovation (Optima or Magentis), Forte (Cerato or Spectra) and Soul.

The Korea Design Awards are sponsored by the Ministry of Knowledge Economy, and supported by the Korea Institute of Design Promotion. The annual awards are considered the definitive design awards in Korea.
