NIMN Honours MTN

In continuation of its winning streak, Nigeria's leading telecommunications company, MTN has been awarded the National Award for Marketing Excellence (NAME) in the GSM category by the National Institute of Marketing of Nigeria (NIMN). The award was presented to MTN by the President of the institute, Chief Lugard E.A Aimiuwu as a climax of the 2008 edition of the prestigious awards held in Lagos recently.

The NIMN instituted the awards with the sole objective of identifying, recognising, rewarding and celebrating excellence in market practice among the individual and corporate members of the institute. This year's edition was unique in that the onus of identifying the best marketing practice and the winners in the various categories was left with consumers who are the target of such marketing initiatives by various brands.

In this regard, ahead of this year's colourful award ceremony which was graced by marketing professionals, captains of industry and technocrats from across the country, the NIMN carried out a nationwide consumer research on all brands marketed in Nigeria.

“Such brands which come under 22 categories cover capital and consumer goods as well as physical products and services,” said Mr. Uche Aligbe, Chairman, NAME 2008 organising committee. In the estimation of the consumers, MTN came tops in the keenly contested Global System for Mobile communications category.

It would be recalled that MTN had been similarly adjudged the best brand in the telecommunications industry by the institute in 2005. Many of the marketing initiatives of the company have variously won accolades locally and internationally since the company began commercial operation in Nigeria.

Last October MTN won two Gold awards, two Silver awards and three Bronze awards at the Lagos Advertising and Ideas Festival (LAIF) in the categories of the Best Press Advert (Corporate Image), Best Press Advert (Telecom services), Best TV Commercial (Telecoms services), Best Outdoor Communication, among others.

“We are very delighted to receive this endorsement from Nigerian consumers and would like to reiterate our commitment to tirelessly improve our offerings at the marketplace to justify the confidence they have reposed in us,” said Mr. Bola Akingbade, Chief Marketing Officer, MTN.
He also thanked the National Institute of Marketing of Nigeria for the catalytic role they are playing in enthroning best marketing practices in Nigeria.

Adenuga is Pan-African Investor of the year
…As Glo wins five Awards at NITTA 2008

Chairman of Globacom, Dr. Mike Adenuga Jr. has been adjudged the Pan-African Telecom Investor of the Year by the Nigerian Information Telecommunications Technology Awards (NITTA), the highest telecoms quality and performance Award in the country.

Its Group Chief Operating Officer, Mr. Mohamed Jameel, was also voted as the Telecom CEO of the Year.
At the awards ceremony which held in Lagos, Dr. Adenuga's company, Globacom, was named the Rural Access Phone Service Provider of the Year, GSM Operator of the Year and the National Telephone Operator of the Year; making Globacom the highest award winner at the event with five awards.

While applauding Dr. Adenuga as the Pan African Telecom Investor of the Year, NITTA said that the businessman had made Globacom the first single telecoms firm in the region to test the 3G network, lay an undersea cable across West Africa to Europe and launch the first nationwide optic fibre transmission network.

On behalf of Globacom, Dr. Adenuga also signed a contract to install West Africa's first wireless network based on Universal Mobile Telecommunication Service/High Speed Packet Access (UMTS/HSPA) technology. “This project will provide one million subscribers with state of the arts mobile broadband services.” NITTA said.

Dr. Adenuga, it was noted, has taken Glo to Ghana and the Republic of Benin, thereby setting the tempo of competition in the region, which will automatically increase the quality of service along international standard. “The region is definitely about to experience true integration envisaged by the founding fathers of ECOWAS.” Said NITTA.

In the citation on Glo as GSM Operator of the Year, the judges of the award said that Glo Mobile has been at the forefront of revolutionary changes in the GSM sector in Nigeria, offering both prepaid and contract services along with a range of Value Added Services.

“Despite losing a two-year head start to competition, Glo Mobile has in five years of operation become the fastest growing GSM network in Africa, Asia and the Middle East and the third fastest growing network in the world achieving more than 19 million subscribers. Within this period, the network has earned the reputation of providing a better coverage than competition put together wherever it is present,” the citation read.

It also noted Glo Mobile's roaming partnership agreement with over 60 telecoms operators worldwide, whereby subscribers can travel abroad and still have their mails pushed to their Blackberry devices while on the move. “This is another unrivalled edge,” it stated.
As Rural Access Phone Service Provider of the Year Globacom, was commended for “deploying services into the rural underserved areas of the country.”

M-Net has appointed experienced international business expert Biola Adekanbi as its new Channel Director, Africa with immediate effect. The talented Nigerian has an impressive track record, with experience in Marketing, Corporate Sponsorship and Educational strategy at a global level.

A statement by Segun Fayose of the Corporate Communications and Public Affairs department of MultiChoice Nigeria said Adekanbi joins M-Net after a 5-year stint in New York at Sesame Workshop, the non-profit educational organization behind the Emmy-award winning television

series, Sesame Street. There, she served in a number of roles including Educational Outreach Project Manager, Corporate Sponsorship Manager and Regional Director, International Strategies Group Sub-Saharan Africa.

Before joining Sesame Workshop, she was Marketing and Campus Relations Manager at Daewoo Motors America, based in Chicago, and Midwest Regional Marketing Manager at Bigwords.com in San Francisco. A University of Cincinnati alumnus, Biola has a degree in Public Health and Marketing.

M-Net CEO Patricia Scholtemeyer is delighted that Adekanbi has joined the team. “It's a real coup for us to have been able to lure Biola away from New York to take up this exciting new role within the company,” she says. “M-Net will be expanding its business in Africa significantly, and Biola's wealth of international experience in the fields of business and entertainment makes her the perfect person to spearhead this important venture.”

Not content with a 24/7 career behind the scenes at some of the world's biggest companies, Biola has also found time to serve as a fellow at the Nigeria Leadership Initiative, be an active member of the New York Women in Technology group and volunteer at the French-American Children Aid Fun and New York Cares.

She is also a mentor at AIESEC (International Exchange and Development Organization), an organisation which actively contributes to the training and development of tomorrow's global leaders through mentoring and training programs.

Biola is looking forward to the challenge of expanding the channel's footprint in Africa. “I'm so pleased to be back at home,” she says. “M-Net offered me a chance I could not turn down and I'm excited to be able to contribute to the development of the African television market!”

Progenics Wins Double
-Sets Global Targets for 2009

In tandem with its recent acclaim as a leader in the enterprise technology solutions arena in Nigeria, frontline systems and solutions integrators in multiple sectors of the economy, Progenics Corp limited has continued to receive performance accolades. Within a space of three months, the company has been awarded two (2) distinguishing awards as Best Software Company in Nigeria for the year 2008 according to a release by Newswire Nigeria.

First was the third consecutive back-to-back win of the Nigerian IT and Telecom Awards (NITTA) as the Best Indigenous Software Company of the year, and recently the Lagos Enterprise Awards (LEAD) in collaboration with the Lagos State Ministry of Commerce and Industry also awarded it the Best Software Company.

This was achieved after beating the likes of Socketworks and SystemSpecs to the coveted award, making it the very first time any other company will be recognised with two prestigious awards in the software genre in the same year.

In an impressive ceremony held at the Aquatic hall Ikeja Lagos, the organisers of the Lagos Enterprise Awards made it known that the concept of LEAD, as the premier enterprise award that promotes initiatives, leadership excellence and the culture of economic advancement in the continent, is to recognise and reward innovators of excellent ideas and organisations that are leading lights in the enterprise.

The award was instituted as a public-private-partnership project by the immediate past governor of Lagos State, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed in 2006 via a partnership agreement between the State Government's Ministry of Commerce & Industry and Sainte Paul International as event organisers.

On why Progenics deserves to be so recognised, the chief executive officer of the company, Dr. Anthony Udoh, explained that the expertise and professionalism of his firm over the years has made it the solution provider of choice for the financial, oil/gas and public sectors of the economy.

This can be seen by the plethora of specialised application solutions from the company's stable like the GovAc (premium e-government solution), and Symbols (a complete range of solutions for investment management and financials) and SymbolsM (an integrated solution for the micro-finance institutions).

This is in addition to the elaborate technical superiority exhibited by the company in the complete automation of the floor of the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE).
According to Dr. Udoh, “Our efforts in

IT solutions in the country and beyond has always stood us out as solution providers of choice so there is really no surprise that everyone will want to recognise our achievements. Rather, it is more of a challenge for us to always stay on top by doing what we do in the best possible global standards”, he concluded.

In a related development, the management of Progenics has said that it has concluded plans to formally open its international office in the United States of America.

Making this known recently from their Lagos office, the management of the company said that the idea behind the new office is to properly define the international identity of the company as well as positioning it to offer enterprise IT solutions to a greater number of international clients.
The office is expected to be opened before the end of the year.

Nortel Wins Spanish GSM-R Contract

Nortel has been selected by Spain's national railway infrastructure company, ADIF, to implement, operate and maintain a complete GSM-R radio communication solution on the new Barcelona-Figueres high-speed line. The contract value is estimated at over €21 million (US$27 million).

This new GSM-R project by ADIF links the Spanish Madrid-Barcelona high-speed line with Figueres-Perpignan that crosses the Spanish and French border. The international Figueres-Perpignan high-speed line also has a GSM-R network deployed by Nortel. Consistency in network technologies by Nortel ensures the interoperability of the Spanish line network with the French and other European high-speed railway networks.

The new high-speed line, planned for commercial operation in 2012, will accommodate trains running at speeds of up to 350 km per hour. The line has been designed not only for passenger traffic but also for freight traffic originating or terminating at Barcelona.

“This contract is the first with ADIF for a high-speed line, extending our global market leadership in GSM-R,” said Fernando Valdivielso, vice president, Nortel Iberia. “Our experience deploying GSM-R networks worldwide was a key factor for ADIF's decision to award this contract to Nortel.”

The contract also includes a three-year network operation and maintenance contract.
